Who is J.J. McCarthy? Meet Michigan's hyped QB1 hoping to build on Tom Brady'blueprint' | Sporting News

As the Rams enter the first round of the draft for the first time since 2016, there’s uncertainty about the team’s direction given various roster needs.

Areas such as the secondary, where the Rams ranked 25th in pass defense, and the need for an edge rusher, with only 41 sacks last season, are potential focuses. On the offensive side, the offensive line is a concern, especially with players like guard Kevin Dotson hitting free agency.

According to NFL.com’s Eric Edholm, the Rams might use their first-round pick to secure a future successor for Matthew Stafford, and J.J. McCarthy, the star quarterback from Michigan, is seen as a potential fit. Edholm notes that McCarthy, a Midwest native, has displayed adaptability and composure, making him a good fit for Sean McVay’s system.

In the last season with the Wolverines, McCarthy had an impressive record, completing 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns, leading Michigan to an undefeated season, a Big Ten championship, and a national title. His success has led to high praise from his former head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who declared him the greatest quarterback in the history of college football. Harbaugh also predicted McCarthy to be the first quarterback selected in the upcoming draft, even surpassing more widely recognized prospects like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels.

While opinions on McCarthy’s potential vary, the Rams could find him to be a compelling option for their future at the 19th pick.
