In the latest NFL mock draft from ESPN’s Field Yates, the Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen Oregon standout Bo Nix as their first-round quarterback with the 20th overall pick. According to Yates, Nix becomes the fifth quarterback selected in the first round. Despite the surprise factor, Yates believes Nix has the chance to compete for a starting role in his rookie season, going up against former first-round pick Kenny Pickett during training camp.

While there might be some unexpected elements in this pick, the Steelers have expressed support for Kenny Pickett, their 20th overall selection from two years ago, this offseason. However, they’ve also stated their intention to bring in competition for the quarterback position. Choosing a quarterback in this draft range can be divisive, but Yates argues that the Steelers need to elevate their performance beyond just making the playoffs. With Pickett as the current starting quarterback, the franchise has experienced a low ceiling, especially given their recent playoff struggles with five consecutive losses.
