A major setback has hit Michael Malone and his rebuilding plans after standout guard Derek Dixon officially committed to Arizona, ending his time with the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball.

Dixon’s decision comes shortly after taking an official visit to Tucson, where Tommy Lloyd and the Wildcats staff made a strong push to secure his services. The move delivers a significant recruiting blow for Malone, who had been working to retain and reshape key pieces of the roster.

The sophomore guard had been viewed as an important part of UNC’s future core after showing steady growth during his freshman season. However, after entering the transfer portal, he quickly drew strong interest from multiple programs before ultimately choosing Arizona.

Derek Dixon appeared in all 33 games last season, earning a larger role as the year progressed. He developed into a reliable backcourt contributor, known for his shooting efficiency and ability to handle playmaking duties when needed.

His departure leaves another hole in Malone’s roster rebuild, as the new coaching era continues to experience early turbulence in the transfer portal. For Arizona, meanwhile, the addition strengthens their backcourt and adds another promising piece to their 2026 roster.
