In a surprising roster decision, the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball program has reportedly parted ways with five-star 2026 recruit Dylan Mingo, according to 247Sports.
Mingo, a consensus top-10 prospect, had originally committed to UNC under former head coach Hubert Davis, choosing the Tar Heels over programs such as Baylor, Penn State, and Washington. His exit now marks a significant shift under new head coach Michael Malone, as the program continues reshaping its future roster.
The 6-foot-5 point guard from Long Island Lutheran High School in New York had an impressive reputation, despite missing much of his senior season due to an ankle injury. He still boosted his stock by earning MVP honors at the NBA Top 100 Camp, where he showcased elite production across the board.
Reports suggest Malone’s decision is part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at refining the roster to better fit his system. With changes underway, UNC is prioritizing balance, size, and fit over simply retaining high-profile commitments.
Mingo’s departure could also open the door for other key targets in the transfer market. One name closely linked to UNC is guard Juke Harris, a former Wake Forest standout who recently met with Malone’s staff and is considered a major priority in the portal.
Despite the loss, UNC has managed to retain other key pieces, including top-25 recruit Maximo Adams, signaling that the rebuild under Malone remains active and ongoing as the new era in Chapel Hill takes shape.
