North Carolina has added Bryan Tibaldi as an Assistant Coach with Michael Malone. According to multiple reports, bringing to Chapel Hill a longtime video and player-development specialist whose résumé spans the NBA, the G League and multiple Division I programs.
Tibaldi was an assistant coach last season at Providence, following a six-year run in the Cleveland Cavaliers organization that included a promotion to NBA assistant coach in September 2024.
Before arriving at UNC, Tibaldi spent several seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization where he steadily climbed through the coaching ranks. He worked in player development, video analysis, scouting preparation, and eventually became a full NBA assistant coach. His experience inside an NBA system is viewed as a valuable addition for a UNC program entering a new era under Malone.
Tibaldi’s coaching path also includes time with several college basketball programs including the Missouri Tigers men’s basketball, DePaul Blue Demons men’s basketball, and Cleveland State Vikings men’s basketball. During those stops he built a reputation as an experienced coach who specialized in film study, player growth, and game preparation while working alongside future NBA talent.
One of the most notable parts of Tibaldi’s background is his connection to legendary Coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball. Tibaldi both played and later worked within the Spartans program learning under one of the most respected coaches in college basketball. That experience helped shape his coaching philosophy, discipline, toughness, and preparation.
His arrival also reflects the larger vision Michael Malone appears to be building at UNC. Rather than relying solely on traditional college recruiting backgrounds. Malone is assembling a staff with professional basketball experience and modern development strategies.
For UNC fans, Tibaldi represents more than just another Assistant Coach hire. His mix of NBA development experience, advanced scouting knowledge, and college basketball roots could play an important role in shaping the Tar Heels future. Many around the program believe his ability to develop players and bring a professional approach to preparation could become one of the more underrated additions to the staff.
