The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball have received a major offseason lift following a significant NCAA eligibility ruling that is already reshaping roster outlooks across college basketball.

With uncertainty surrounding roster decisions as the transfer portal deadline approaches, Duke had managed to avoid major losses beyond Darren Harris and Nik Khamenia. Instead of bracing for further exits, the Blue Devils now find themselves benefiting from a major development.

Maliq Brown is officially set to return for his senior season after the NCAA approved a new eligibility structure granting athletes five years to compete, with the timeline beginning at age 19 or upon high school graduation.
The ruling delivers an immediate impact for Duke, bringing back a player whose contributions extend far beyond the stat sheet. Brown averaged 4.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals last season, serving as a cornerstone of the team’s defensive identity.

Head coach Jon Scheyer now benefits from added depth and experience in the frontcourt, a crucial advantage as the roster continues to take shape this offseason.
Duke also received additional good news, with guard Cayden Boozer confirming his return for his sophomore season, further strengthening the team’s foundation heading into the new campaign.
