5/14 Detroit Tigers Roster Moves

Spencer Torkelson’s two-run home run in the eighth inning gave the Detroit Tigers the lead and helped them win 6-5 to begin their three-game series against the Miami Marlins. They went out to a three-run lead in the second inning, but the Marlins leveled the game in the fifth and took a 5-3 lead in the eighth on a two-run home run by Otto Lopez. Andy Ibanez brought home Wenceel Perez with a single prior to Torkelson’s home run, making the score 5-4. Torkelson then made it 6-5, and Jason Foley closed the door with his tenth save of the year. Matt Manning started for Kenta yesterday.

Maeda, who has a sickness that has put him on the 15-day injured list, and Manning pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out five. They also activated RHP Beau Brieske prior to last night’s game, putting RHP Shelby Miller on the 15-day disabled list due to irritation of the ulnar nerve. Due to a hamstring strain, they activated third baseman Gio Urshela off the 10-day disabled list prior to today’s game. In response, they are returning outfielder Akil Baddoo to Triple-A Toledo.

Beau Brieske of RHP
Having played with the Tigers for a portion of two seasons, Brieske began 15 games in 2022 and finished 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA, 4.97 FIP, 1.20 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. He made 25 appearances in the previous season, starting one of them. He was 2-3 with a 3.60 ERA, 4.00 FIP, 1.37 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts in 35 innings. He’s played in 13 games this season for Triple-A Toledo, going 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 21.1 innings.

RHP – Shelby Miller

Miller on December 22, 2023, inked a $3.25 million one-year contract with a team option for 2025. This season, he has made 15 appearances, going 3–4 with a 4.41 ERA, 4.36 FIP, 1.04 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched.

Gio Urshela (3B)

Urshela, who had played in 18 games prior to the injury, had a slash line of.298/.310/.333 with a.644 OPS; he also had two doubles, six RBI, four runs scored, and one walk. On February 22, Urshela signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers. During his three games as a rehab player for Toledo, he hit.625 with an OPS of 1.292, two RBI, two runs scored, and one walk.

OF: Akil Baddoo

After being called up on Sunday, Baddoo participated in one game on Sunday as a pinch hitter. He recorded a hit, going 1–1 with a triple, and scored a run. He slashed in thirty games at Triple-A.With an.844 OPS, he hit.257/.366/.478 with five doubles, four triples, four home runs, sixteen RBI, twenty-one runs scored, four stolen bases, and nineteen walks.
