An analysis of Dusty Stromer’s First Season at Gonzaga: Should he be released or retained?

Assessing Dusty Stromer’s debut season with Gonzaga reveals that he assumed responsibilities uncommon for freshmen in the program’s history. Despite being a four-star recruit, he initially occupied a crucial bench role behind a seasoned starting lineup. However, circumstances changed drastically when Steele Venters suffered a season-ending injury, thrusting Stromer into a prominent position on a nationally ranked team.

Amidst the pressure, Stromer exhibited moments of brilliance, notably scoring 15 points against USC. Nevertheless, like most freshmen, he encountered typical challenges adapting to the collegiate level. His transition to a bench role in January appeared to alleviate some pressure, resulting in improved shooting efficiency and reduced turnovers while maintaining his intensity.

Despite Gonzaga’s depth issues, Stromer garnered significant playing time, ranking among the top freshmen in minutes played under Coach Few. While averaging 4.8 points and 3.3 rebounds, he displayed versatility by contributing defensively and making an impact offensively, particularly as a spot-up shooter.

Stromer succeeded in carving out a role through relentless hustle and gritty play, adjusting his game to meet the team’s needs. Gonzaga’s fast-paced style suited his strengths, especially as a transition shooter. However, he needs to improve his finishing at the rim and develop a stronger inside presence to complement his outside shooting abilities.

Looking forward, Stromer’s off-season priorities should include enhancing his physical strength to handle the rigors of college basketball better. Improving his ball handling skills and defensive capabilities will also be essential for his ongoing development. With dedication to refining his skills and physical attributes, Stromer possesses the potential to become a significant contributor for Gonzaga in the future.
