Matt Baker, who previously served as the special teams assistant for the Atlanta Falcons, has a connection with the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith. Baker also brings experience as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at John Carroll University. His coaching journey began as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2010, followed by a role as an analyst and QB coach for Western Michigan in 2019. Additionally, Baker had a four-year NFL playing career as a quarterback, concluding with the Buffalo Bills in 2009.
Mateo Kambui, another candidate, worked as the assistant offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Prior to his time with the Falcons, he was part of the Marlin Briscoe Coaching Fellowship with the Denver Broncos from 2021 to 2022, contributing to scouting and coaching wide receivers.
Phil Matusz, the head strength and conditioning coach at Boston College, is also in consideration. The Steelers have recently parted ways with their strength and conditioning coaches, and Matusz, with four years of experience at Boston College, is among the candidates. Before his tenure at Boston College, Matusz spent six seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Ohio State. Notably, he played a role in developing top NFL Draft talents such as Zion Johnson and Zay Flowers during his time with the Eagles.
