Former Browns Offensive Coordinator Could Rejoin Baker Mayfield.

The Browns promptly decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt at the conclusion of the 2023 season. However, the former Cleveland assistant may not undergo an extended job search, as an opportunity is emerging for him to potentially reunite with a quarterback he’s familiar with.

In less than two weeks since leaving Cleveland, Van Pelt is already on the path to securing a new position. One potential opportunity involves reuniting with former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

According to various sources, Van Pelt is set to interview for the offensive coordinator role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This opening emerged after Dave Canales left to assume the head coaching position with the Panthers. Canales played a crucial role in revitalizing Mayfield’s career during the past season, where the former No. 1 overall pick achieved career highs in passing yards (4,044), touchdowns (28), and completion percentage (64%). Mayfield’s standout season propelled the Buccaneers to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Mayfield, who played the previous season on a one-year, prove-it deal worth $4 million, is set to become a free agent in March. Considering his productive performance, there is speculation that the Buccaneers will prioritize re-signing him. This aligns with their pursuit of Van Pelt, who had previously worked closely with Mayfield as Cleveland’s quarterback coach and offensive coordinator for two seasons from 2020-2021.

Before this year, Mayfield’s most successful season came under the guidance of Van Pelt and Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski in the memorable 2020 campaign, where Cleveland nearly upset the Chiefs in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

While Van Pelt is being considered for the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator role, it’s worth noting that he is also a contender for the Raiders’ offensive coordinator opening, introducing an element of competition for his services.
