East Carolina has made an early call at quarterback, naming Mitch Griffis as its starting QB following a strong showing in the opening phase of offseason camp.

The decision comes sooner than expected, as coaches had initially indicated the competition could extend deep into preseason. Instead, Griffis separated himself early with consistent performances and a clear command of the offense.

Griffis, a transfer with prior starting experience, impressed the coaching staff with his decision-making, accuracy, and leadership during practices. His ability to quickly adapt to the system and operate efficiently with both first- and second-team units played a key role in the decision.

Head coach Blake Harrell and his staff had been evaluating both Griffis and Emory Williams throughout camp. While Williams showed flashes of potential and remains a highly regarded option within the program, the staff ultimately opted for experience and consistency in naming Griffis the starter.

The early decision provides East Carolina with added stability at the position as the team continues offseason preparations. With a starting quarterback now in place, the Pirates can focus on building rhythm and cohesion on offense ahead of the upcoming season.
