East Carolina’s quarterback situation has taken a clear turn under new offensive coordinator Jordan Davis, who has officially begun to settle the competition at the position heading into the 2026 season.

After evaluating the quarterback room throughout spring work and early offseason development, the Pirates now appear to have a clear leader emerging in the battle for the starting role.

Mitch Griffis has impressed the new coaching staff with his poise, experience, and command of the offense. His ability to quickly adapt to Davis’ system, make smart decisions under pressure, and lead the huddle has set him apart during competitive reps.
While the battle included strong competition from Emory Williams, Davis noted that Griffis consistently showed the most complete understanding of the playbook and demonstrated the leadership qualities needed to run the offense effectively.
The decision does not completely shut the door on competition, but it firmly establishes Griffis as the frontrunner and expected starter as ECU continues preparation for the upcoming season.

Davis emphasized that building stability at quarterback was one of his top priorities upon arrival, and Griffis’ early performances have given the coaching staff confidence in his ability to lead the unit moving forward.
For ECU, the move marks an important step in establishing identity under new offensive leadership, with Griffis now positioned to take full control of the offense as the Pirates move closer to the 2026 campaign.
