Brisbane Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs has been officially removed from the team’s active roster for the opening rounds of the 2025 NRL season following a significant quadriceps injury. The setback occurred during the Broncos’ final pre-season match against the Canterbury Bulldogs, when Staggs was forced from the field early due to discomfort.

Initial assessments suggested a minor strain, but subsequent scans revealed a more serious muscle tear in his quadriceps. The injury will sideline the star centre for an estimated four to six weeks, a major blow to the Broncos’ early-season campaign.

Broncos head of performance Dave Ballard confirmed that Staggs had already begun rehabilitation. “Kotoni has picked up a quad injury and had a scan – he’ll spend the next 4-6 weeks working with our rehab staff. He’s a professional, and he’s already locked in on getting back as soon as possible.”

Staggs’ absence creates a challenge for coach Kevin Walters, who must now make key decisions regarding the team’s backline. Young talents like Deine Mariner and Gehamat Shibasaki are expected to compete for the vacant centre position. Mariner has been praised for his improved physical conditioning, while Shibasaki’s recent performances in the trials have also impressed coaching staff.

Despite the setback, Staggs remains a central figure in the club’s future. Recently promoted to the Broncos’ leadership group, he joins a core group of senior players including Adam Reynolds, Patrick Carrigan, and Payne Haas. His commitment to the team remains strong, having recently voiced his desire to remain with the Broncos long-term, saying, “This is where I want to be. I love the club – I’ve been here for eight years now.”

The Broncos will now prepare for their season opener against the Sydney Roosters without one of their most dynamic attacking threats. While the loss of Staggs is a disappointment, the team is confident in its depth and the ability of emerging players to step up in his absence.

Staggs is expected to return to full training in late March or early April, depending on how his recovery progresses. The Broncos will be eager to have him back in the lineup as they aim to build momentum in the early rounds of the season.
