One of the biggest questions hanging over the Los Angeles Lakers is the future of Austin Reaves. After extending Luka Dončić earlier in the offseason, the focus now shifts to Reaves and his next deal.
The challenge for the Lakers is that Reaves is trending toward a hefty contract, especially if he continues his steady growth. His potential free agency is set for next summer, and he’ll likely be one of the most in-demand names on the market. Reports already suggest at least one Western Conference rival is monitoring him closely.
Spurs Eyeing Austin Reaves as Possible Target
If the Lakers can’t keep him, the San Antonio Spurs could make a push. According to Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints, San Antonio and several other teams are expected to pursue Reaves once he hits the open market.
“Should Reaves decline his current option, he’ll enter free agency unrestricted, and league sources indicate the Spurs and others are keeping tabs on his situation,” Irwin reported.
Reaves has earned the right to chase a lucrative payday after setting career highs across the board last season. Despite that, there’s already chatter about him being replaced in the Lakers’ starting lineup. Rumors suggest Los Angeles could lean toward Marcus Smart for his perimeter defense—something that could push Reaves toward leaving as soon as he’s able to opt out.
Why the Lakers Can’t Afford to Lose Him
Defensive shortcomings aside, the Lakers should prioritize keeping Reaves. His offensive production is too valuable to lose for nothing. If they decide not to retain him, pursuing a trade would at least prevent the team from losing him outright.
Reaves’ numbers speak for themselves: 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game last season, all personal bests. He shot 46% from the field and nearly 38% from three-point range, showing just how much he’s elevated his game.
