Netflix to Release Epic Music Documentary Featuring Paul McCartney and Lemmy Kilmister – Launch Set for July 17, 2025
In an announcement that has sent shockwaves through the music world, Netflix has officially confirmed the release of an extraordinary new documentary chronicling the lives and legacies of two of rock and roll’s most iconic figures: Paul McCartney and Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. Titled “Louder Than Legends,” the film is set to premiere globally on July 17, 2025, promising fans a deeply personal, electrifying, and unfiltered journey into the hearts and histories of these larger-than-life artists.“We are happy to announce that we are done with production and it will be released on July 17, 2025,” said Netflix in a statement released earlier this morning.
This ambitious documentary marks the first time that McCartney and Lemmy — two titans from different ends of the rock spectrum — are explored side-by-side. One known for his melodic genius and the other for his snarling bass lines and wild-living persona, McCartney and Lemmy have more in common than meets the eye. Through rare footage, exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, and never-before-seen home videos, Louder Than Legends tells a story of two men who helped define the sound, spirit, and soul of modern music.
Two Icons, One Stage in History
Sir Paul McCartney, the legendary Beatle and one of the most celebrated songwriters in history, is a household name whose melodies have soundtracked generations. Meanwhile, Lemmy Kilmister — founder, frontman, and thunderous bassist of Motörhead — carved his own path with pure grit, speed, and unapologetic rebellion. Together, they represent two poles of rock music: harmony and havoc.
Despite their contrasting styles, the documentary uncovers surprising parallels. Both began their musical journeys in post-war Britain, both refused to conform to trends, and both continued to perform into their later years with unwavering passion. They lived for music — and music lived through them.
Never-Before-Seen Footage and Candid Interviews
Louder Than Legends features more than just performance clips. Audiences will be treated to never-released interviews with Lemmy recorded before his death in 2015, offering reflective and humorous insights into his relationships with other rockers — including McCartney.
In one particularly moving moment, Lemmy recalls listening to The Beatles in his early days as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix, admitting, “I didn’t get it at first. But McCartney? That bloke knew how to write a tune that made the world stop.”
McCartney, in return, speaks warmly about Lemmy’s raw authenticity: “Lemmy was rock and roll. Full stop. He didn’t care what people thought. He did it his way, and that’s something I’ve always respected.”
Other music legends also appear in the film, including Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Lars Ulrich, Joan Jett, Elton John, and Slash — all offering powerful reflections on how these two men influenced their own careers.
Directed by Oscar-Winning Team
Helming the documentary is Asif Kapadia, the acclaimed director behind Amy and Senna. Known for his immersive storytelling and masterful use of archival footage, Kapadia has once again delivered a film that feels as intimate as it is epic.
“The idea was never to compare Paul and Lemmy,” said Kapadia during a Netflix press conference. “It was to trace how their very different roads still shaped the same global movement — rock music as a form of liberation.
”A Soundtrack to Remember
The documentary also boasts a blistering, genre-spanning soundtrack featuring remastered classics like Live and Let Die, Band on the Run, Ace of Spades, and Overkill, along with stripped-down acoustic demos and previously unreleased studio outtakes.
There’s even a surprise collaboration unearthed from the archives: a brief jam session between McCartney and Lemmy, recorded during a backstage meeting in the mid-2000s. The rough, bluesy track, tentatively titled “Heavy Melody,” will debut in the closing credits.
A Story for the Ages

Netflix has long been a champion of music documentaries, but Louder Than Legends is shaping up to be its most emotionally charged and historically rich offering yet. Fans of rock, punk, metal, and pop alike will find something to love in this sprawling tribute to two individuals who refused to be ordinary.
Early preview screenings for industry insiders have reportedly drawn standing ovations, with some calling it “the definitive rock doc of the decade.”
Legacy Beyond the Stage
The documentary doesn’t shy away from the personal struggles of its stars. From McCartney’s battles with grief and creative reinvention after The Beatles, to Lemmy’s lifelong defiance of health warnings and addiction, Louder Than Legends captures the cost and courage behind their success.
In one of the most poignant scenes, McCartney visits Lemmy’s memorial statue at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in Los Angeles. He stands in silence for a moment before softly saying, “He burned bright, didn’t he?”
Coming July 17, 2025 – Only on Netflix
Whether you’re a lifelong Beatles fan, a die-hard Motörhead follower, or someone just discovering the legends, Louder Than Legends is a must-watch cinematic experience. More than just a documentary, it’s a time capsule, a love letter to rock’s rebellious spirit, and a reminder that while legends may pass on, their music never dies.
