Isabell Werth: A Legacy of Excellence and Advocacy in Equestrian Sport

Isabell Werth, Germany’s most decorated equestrian Olympian, continues to make significant strides in the world of dressage. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she led the German team to a gold medal in the dressage team event, marking her eighth Olympic gold and 13th overall medal. Riding Wendy de Fontaine, Werth scored 79.89%, contributing to Germany’s narrow victory over Denmark and Britain .

In November 2024, Werth was honored with the Pegasos Prize at the 42nd German Sports Press Ball in Frankfurt, recognizing her as a “Legend of Sport.” The award, presented by the Association of German Sports Journalists, celebrated her exceptional achievements and contributions to equestrian sports .

Earlier that year, Werth retired her Grand Prix horse Emilio, who had been a significant part of her career since 2015. Emilio’s final performance at the Wiesbaden World Cup was a triumphant farewell, scoring 83.3% in the Freestyle test .

Beyond her competitive success, Werth has been an advocate for ethical practices in dressage. In response to concerns over horse welfare, she emphasized the importance of immediate action against mistreatment, stating that issues should not be delayed for years . Additionally, she has called for open and fair discussions to distinguish between unintentional mistakes and actual abuse in the sport .

As she continues to inspire both on and off the arena, Werth’s legacy is defined not only by her record-breaking achievements but also by her commitment to the integrity and future of equestrian sport.
